    Might be going to Haiti...

Post  washburn on April 14th 2010, 5:21 pm

Wifey, me and 3 other pharmacy students (who're all from my class about to graduate in May) might be going to volunteer with disaster help (medical/pharmaceutical/health care) in Haiti for a week - probably 1st week of May.

Wife, who's a pharmacist already, will be the sort of the "leader" of this tiny pharmacist/pharmacy student group...it's organized by the univ of Miami.

Excited and a bit scared at the same time...
    any feedback/wisdom/advice is welcome.

WOW, that's a huge decision, especially with your wife! I know there is a need but look at all the options, disease control, violence, etc....can't you find a local need?

i guess i said my piece... but think and pray about it.

kudos for the thought even if you decide not to go.. cheers

They could sure use your volunteer help with Jewish Voice ministries, too. It's a Christian organization. They do medical outreach all over the world for very poor people, for example, in Russia (where Jews are still persecuted awfuly) and Ethiopia. It's very inspiring and uplifting. They're always asking for much needed volunteers. Also, Bridges for Peace, which is a very nice, quality organization. We've thought about volunteering for Bridges for Peace. They advertise for volunteers. My wife is a retired RN, but she's 78 and doesn't think she could be useful anymore. And I don't know what I can do anymore. If I were to volunteer for six months or a year or so. I can't build and do repair work with my back and age. The warehouse from which they distribute food and hot meals to hundreds of poor people every day in Russia and Israel they say is "strenuous" work. I don't know all this latest software and technology so I'm useless in the office.

    Thanks for the encouraging words...

we specifically sought out an organizer who has no religious affiliations, and strictly offered ONLY medical help in Haiti. That's all we're interested in.

    Thanks.
