    Boston Acoustics A-150's

    Post  skeeter99 on March 25th 2010, 8:15 pm

I posted about this over at TCA and Audiokarma but there are some here that don't go to either of those sites so I thought I'd share a bit here too Smile

I recently picked up two sets of older Boston Acoustics A-150's for $225 from a local seller off of CL. It was a total steal! They have both been recently re-foamed and one set is clearly more broken in than the other as bass response is clearly more visceral in the broken in set.

These are fantastic speakers and I'm super happy with them. They are on the short side but they play well above their height and image fantastically. I actually think I may like them better than my Mini's Shocked They have great bass with quick and accurate beats and the vocals are very accurate. With the Mini's the bass is there and loud but it isn't as defined and impactful as it is with these old Bostons. They are forgiving, but not overly so, on poorly recorded music. The Mini's are probably more forgiving and are definitely more laid back than the Bostons. I'll post more later but this is the down and dirty on them. Here are pics of the two sets:

I don't know if they're really better than the Mini's but there are certain aspects about them that I prefer (the bass mentioned above). Midrange vocals are much smoother in the Mini's but the imaging seems better in the Bostons. I have to say these are observations based on two VERY different setups. I have the Mini's on my main setup off an Onkyo 805 and source is a PS3 via HDMI utilizing the Burr Brown DAC's in the 805 and the Bostons are powered by a Rotel RSX-1056 with the source being a Rotel RCD-955AX going analog.

Don't get me wrong, the Mini's are fantastic speakers but are VERY picky for placement and they don't have the largest of sweet spots. The Bostons are much more forgiving in placement and have a larger sweet spot. A better comparison would be to bring the Mini's up to my Rotel setup upstairs but the Mini's are huge and I don't feel like moving them around Very Happy Yup, I'm lazy Smile I may try to bring the Boston's downstairs to do a better comparison, though ...

For now, for the price, I feel the Bostons are the best audio purchase I've ever made. The enjoyment per $ spent is quite fantastic.

The A-150's are really nice speakers. I have the small A-40's, one of the few speakers that I've ever had that I didn't tire of and decided to keep. I was using them when I bought my first X-ls -- I wasn't really using them because they needed new "surrounds". That was a problem with BA speakers (from what I've read), the surrounds disintegrate. That was my experience, too. Currently, Oak Tree Enterprises has two nice condition pairs of BA A-70's for sale at good prices considering they've replaced the surrounds and checked the speakers out thoroughly.

The A-40's are a great little bookshelf. It's funny you mention the A-70's, my father in law just gave me a set of them last night. One of them needs a new surround but the other is fine so I'm going to have them both done so they'll be in mint condition. I'm developing quite the little Boston accumulation here!

Just got new binding posts for my A-150's. I got these ones:

They look nice and are VERY heavy, I think they'll work nice. I won't have time the next couple days to put them in but I'm going to re-solder everything when I put them in and I'll probably run new internal wiring to all the drivers at the same time. After that will be recapping these guys bounce
